Aquatic therapy is exercise and movement that is performed in the water using the physical properties of water to assist with patient healing and performance. The aquatic environment provides for multiple benefits through water's buoyancy, warmth, viscosity, and hydrostatic pressure.
Buoyancy minimizes the effects of gravity. It aids in decreasing weight bearing forces thereby reducing stress placed on joints. Viscosity provides resistance without the need for weights. Warmth assists in relaxation, increasing blood flow, and improving circulation. Hydrostatic pressure can decrease swelling and provides joint positional awareness.
Aquatic therapy has proven to be a successful treatment option for many patients suffering from a variety of diagnoses and conditions. These include, but are not limited to: arthritis, fractures, tendonitis, joint replacements, severe back pain, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and various balance disorders.
Our licensed physical therapist, Karen Lane, treats patients on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in a handicapped accessible pool at Purity Springs Resort in Madison, NH. Karen can be contacted for an appointment at MCPT at (603) 447-2533.
All potential aquatic therapy patients must have a written prescription for "aquatic physical therapy" from their physician, a treatment diagnosis, and a comprehensive physical therapy evaluation performed at MCPT in Conway prior to participating in the aquatics phase of their physical therapy program.
