The Certified Athletic Trainer is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in athletic health care. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health professionals, the athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in secondary schools, colleges, pro sports teams, sports medicine clinics, and other health care settings.
A Certified Athletic Trainer is a specialist in the prevention, recognition, emergency care, and rehabilitation of injuries incurred by athletes. Under the supervision of a physician, athletic trainers use the knowledge of each athlete's specific injury and the factors influencing that injury to develop a treatment program based on medical, exercise, and sport sciences.
Certified Athletic trainers have fulfilled the requirements for certification established by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification, Inc., and are regulated by a State Law Practice Act. There are six practice domains in the profession of athletic training:
1. Prevention of athletic injuries
2. Recognition and evaluation of athletic injuries
3. Management, treatment and disposition of athletic injuries
4. Rehabilitation of athletic injuries when appropriate
5. Organization and administration of the athletic training programs
6. Education and counseling of athletes and coaching staff
Athletic trainers work with all levels of athletes. An athlete is defined as a physically active individual training for or participating in an amateur, educational or professional athletic organization or any other association that sponsors athletic programs or events.
