Pilates is an exercise regimen first developed by Joseph Pilates over fifty years ago. His series of exercises were aimed at improving core stability through strengthening what he referred to as "the powerhouse". Pilates combines strength, flexibility, breathing, and mental awareness to attain optimal muscle balance, posture and fitness.
A Pilates exercise program can be integrated into the rehabilitation process and compliment traditional physical therapy approaches. When combined with the knowledge and education of a physical therapist, Pilates can be modified to meet the specific needs of those with complex conditions or diagnoses. These may include, but are not limited to: back and neck pain, general orthopaedic injuries, total joint replacements, women's health issues, and neurologic pathologies.
